This seminar examines a broad range of global trade issues from the perspective of U.S. politics and national interests. In particular, the seminar assesses global trade in terms of domestic interest groups, corporate strategies, U.S. competitiveness, U.S. foreign policy implications, and the development of a rules-based system of global governance. This assessment includes both foreign and global dimensions. This course utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to understand the legal, political, business, economic and national security aspects of global trade. This semester focuses on the policies of the Obama administration, the trade world post-2008 financial crisis, current economic challenges to the U.S., and the upcoming U.S. national elections in 2012. We will have one PowerPoint presentation, one essay (10-15 pages) and a final. Each are of equal weight. Class participation will be considered in the final grade. The purpose of the PowerPoint and essay is to carefully analyze the selected trade topic and to formulate reasoned policy proposals for the United States concerning its competitiveness in the global trading system.
